  1. Find out your House and Senate District, and the names of your Representative and Senator are by calling (651) 296-2146. (Senate districts have the same number as the house, but do not have the letter suffix.). You may also try the internet at
  2. Call for a free Legislative Directory at (651) 296-2146. It contains pictures of all legislators, their addresses, phone numbers, committee assignment and other specific information. A preliminary draft is available about Dec 1 after an election. The final draft is available about Jan 5, once committee assignments are made.
  3. Call to receive the free weekly legislative publications. (They are sent out while the legislature is in session). It has a listing of the committee hearings and legislative meetings for the week. Call in November.

    • Senate: Senate Briefly call (651)296-0259 any time two months before, thru the end of session.
    • Our bills are usually heard in the House Committee on Civil Law and the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Family Law.

    • If you have access to the internet, the site is http://www.leg.state.mn.us/leg/legis.htm.
    • For non-metro members, you can send a written request to the Chief Clerk of the House, 211 State Capitol, St. Paul, MN 55155, or to the Secretary of the Senate, 231 State Capitol, St. Paul, MN 55155.
  5. If you want to know the status of a bill call:

  6. Meet with, call and write to your own Senator and Representative. Keep letters to one page and talk about one issue. Tell them your story and concerns regarding Family Law. Ask for their support on our bills and find out where they stand on our issues. Inform them of bills you would like them to oppose. Use bill number and title.
  7. Try to attend the hearings of the bills that affect you. We have R-Kids buttons we would like people to wear at the hearings. There is power in numbers. Make an impression.
  8. Attend R-Kids group meetings. Notices are sent to everyone who is interested. Call (651) 296-6164.
  9. Write articles and letters to the editor for the newspapers and send R-Kids a copy.
  10. Encourage your parents, grandparents, friends and relatives to become involved. Have them meet with, call or write the legislators in their own district. Tell them what to say - handwritten is OK.
